A step-by-step enterprise AI strategy
1) Stand up governance and set the rules of the road

Publish three concise policies: AI acceptable use, AI development and testing, and AI procurement. 4) Require documentation that people use
For each model, produce:
- A model card that explains intended use, performance across key groups, known limitations, and safety notes.
- A dataset datasheet that explains provenance, collection methods, labeling, known biases, and usage constraints.
Make these templates mandatory for internal builds and vendor-supplied systems. It will speed up audits and reduce surprises in production.
5) Build testing into the lifecycle
Adopt a testing plan per risk tier. For high-risk uses, include human-in-the-loop fail-safes, reproducible evaluation datasets, adversarial tests, and red-team scenarios. Treat generative systems separately by adding prompt-injection resistance, content safety checks, and traceability of retrieval sources if you use RAG. 6) Manage third-party AI the same way you manage vendors
Do not take a vendor’s one-pager at face value. Ask for their equivalent of a model card and a datasheet, plus proof of safety testing and incident response. Bake documentation, incident notification, and retraining obligations into contracts. If they claim alignment to ISO/IEC 42001 or EU AI Act readiness, ask for the mapping and sample evidence.
7) Monitor, log, and be ready to pause
Instrument production systems for accuracy drift, bias signals, and security events. Keep an AI incident log and define clear criteria for when to roll back or disable a model. For customer-facing uses, rehearse the comms plan so you can disclose responsibly and quickly if something goes wrong.
8) Close the loop with assurance
Schedule internal audits and management reviews. If certification is in scope, run a gap assessment against ISO/IEC 42001, fix findings, then proceed to Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits with an accredited body. Keep an eye on new standards like ISO/IEC 42005 for risk impact assessments and fold them into your process.

Do we need impact assessments?
